Historical Place
Traveler's Rest State Historic Site near Toccoa, Georgia, USA, preserves Georgia's last remaining stagecoach inn, built around 1815 by James R. Wyly on land originally granted to Revolutionary soldier Major Jesse Walton, strategically located along the busy Unicoi Turnpike over the Appalachian Mountains.
Wyly opened it as a tavern for travelers until selling it in 1833 to wealthy planter Devereaux Jarrett, who expanded the structure into the headquarters of his vast 14,000-acre cotton plantation worked by enslaved people, housing three generations of Jarretts until the state acquired the site in 1955 for $8,000.
Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964 for its rare architecture and role in early settlement, visitors today tour the restored two-story home filled with original furnishings and artifacts crafted by master cabinetmaker Caleb Shaw, offering glimpses into 19th-century travel, plantation life, and northeast Georgia history near the Tugaloo River.
