Memorial Park
The US Marine Corps War Memorial, located in Arlington Ridge Park near Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia, was dedicated in 1954 to honor all Marines who have given their lives in defense of the United States since 1775.
The memorial is inspired by an iconic 1945 photograph taken during World War II that shows six Marines raising a larger American flag atop Mount Suribachi on the island of Iwo Jima. Sculptor Felix de Weldon created the statue soon after seeing the photo, modeling it with great detail based on the image and the faces of the surviving Marines. The memorial, made of bronze and standing on polished black granite, is a powerful symbol of Marine Corps valor and sacrifice.
The entire project was funded by donations from Marines, reservists, veterans, and supporters without using public funds. It was dedicated by President Dwight D. Eisenhower on November 10, 1954, coinciding with the 179th anniversary of the founding of the Marine Corps.
