Museum
The USS Cairo Gunboat and Museum in Mississippi is located within Vicksburg National Military Park and features one of the seven City Class ironclad gunboats commissioned by the Union Navy during the American Civil War.
Built in 1861 and launched in early 1862, the Cairo played a significant role in controlling the Mississippi River and its tributaries, engaging in several battles and escort missions. It became historically notable as the first ship ever sunk by a remotely detonated mine on December 12, 1862, in the Yazoo River near Vicksburg.
The gunboat remained buried in the river mud for almost a century until rediscovered in 1956 and subsequently salvaged with support from the state of Mississippi. Today, the partially restored vessel is displayed in a specially designed shelter at the museum alongside an exhibit of artifacts recovered from the shipwreck, providing visitors with a unique glimpse into naval warfare and life on a Civil War ironclad.
