Museum
The USS Cairo Naval Museum in Vicksburg, Mississippi, preserves the remains of the USS Cairo, a City-class ironclad gunboat commissioned in January 1862 and named after Cairo, Illinois.
It served in the Union Navy during the Civil War, playing a significant role in controlling the Mississippi River and its tributaries. The Cairo was the first ship in history to be sunk by an electrically detonated torpedo (mine) in December 1862 while clearing mines on the Yazoo River. After being submerged for nearly a century, it was discovered and salvaged in the 1960s and restored at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Mississippi.
The restored vessel is now housed in a specially designed pavilion at Vicksburg National Military Park, where visitors can walk aboard the ironclad and view hundreds of Civil War artifacts recovered from the ship. The adjacent museum offers extensive insights into naval technology of the era and the Civil War's riverine warfare, providing a unique, tangible connection to history and the Vicksburg Campaign.
The site also features a self-guided driving tour and is a poignant part of the park's collection of monuments and memorials related to the Civil War.
