State Park
William B. Umstead State Park in Raleigh, North Carolina, covers about 5,599 acres and was established in 1937 as the Crabtree Creek Recreation Area.
It was developed during the Great Depression with help from the Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Progress Administration to provide jobs and create recreational spaces. The park features over 34 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails, three manmade lakes for fishing, picnic areas, and camping facilities.
Historically, the land was once farmland that suffered soil erosion due to poor farming practices before being repurposed as a park. It was renamed after former Governor William B. Umstead in 1955 to honor his conservation efforts. The park features diverse wildlife, mature forests including the Piedmont Beech Natural Area, and remnants from early human activity like old roadbeds and cemeteries.
It has entrances historically segregated but now united, offering visitors a mix of natural beauty and historical significance just outside the Raleigh urban area.
