Museum
Woolaroc Museum and Wildlife Preserve in the Osage Hills near Bartlesville, Oklahoma, began in 1925 as the rustic ranch retreat of Phillips Petroleum oilman Frank Phillips and now spans about 3,700 acres of rolling prairie and woods that serve as a wildlife preserve for bison, elk, deer, longhorn and exotic cattle, all reached by a scenic drive through the herds.
At its heart is a 50,000-square-foot museum opened in 1929 that has grown room by room into one of the country’s standout Western art and history collections, with more than 600 paintings, 300 bronzes, thousands of Native American artifacts from dozens of tribes, cowboy gear, 101 Ranch memorabilia, and one of the world’s finest Colt firearm collections tracing revolvers from early models to the mid-20th century.
Visitors explore the lodge-like main building filled with taxidermy and frontier displays, the famous 1927 “Woolaroc” airplane that won the Dole Air Race to Hawaii, and outdoor features like the recreated Mountain Man Camp, making the site a blend of museum, historic ranch, and living wildlife sanctuary that preserves both the story of the American West and Phillips’s legacy.
