Yayoi Kusama's Fireflies Infinity Mirror Room, officially titled "You Who Are Getting Obliterated in the Dancing Swarm of Fireflies," is a mesmerizing art installation located at the Phoenix Art Museum in Arizona.
Installed since 2005 and recently refreshed for better accessibility, this immersive room measures about 24 by 24 feet and is lined with mirrors on all walls, ceiling, and floor, creating the illusion of infinite space.
Nearly 200 LED lights hang at varying lengths, flickering and changing colors to simulate a vibrant swarm of fireflies, inspired by Kusama's childhood hallucinations and traditional Japanese firefly-watching culture.
Visitors enter a darkened chamber where the reflections and lights dissolve their sense of self, offering a transcendental experience symbolizing unity and infinity. This installation remains one of the longest-running Kusama Infinity Mirror Rooms in the U.S. and is included with general museum admission, drawing art enthusiasts for its unique blend of technology, light, and psychological depth.
