Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve

Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve, Alaska, United States

Nature Reserve

Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve is a remote wilderness area located on the Alaska Peninsula, encompassing over 600,000 acres centered around the 6-mile-wide caldera of the ancient Aniakchak volcano.

Formed about 3,700 years ago by a massive volcanic eruption that collapsed the original 7,000-foot mountain, the caldera features Surprise Lake, the source of the Aniakchak River, and Vent Mountain, site of the most recent 1931 eruption. The landscape includes volcanic features such as lava fields and cinder cones, glacially altered river valleys, and a coastal region facing the Pacific Ocean.

The monument and preserve are known for harsh weather, limited access mainly by floatplane or boat, and extremely low visitation, making it one of the least visited places in the U.S. National Park System.

The area supports diverse wildlife including caribou, moose, bears, wolves, sea otters, and salmon, and allows subsistence hunting in the monument and both subsistence and sport hunting in the preserve. The dramatic volcanic and natural landscapes offer a rare glimpse into wilderness shaped by historic eruptions and ongoing ecological succession.
