Park
Captain Cook State Recreation Area is a 3,500-acre coastal park on Alaska's Kenai Peninsula along Cook Inlet, located at the end of the Kenai Spur Highway about 25 miles north of Kenai and 14 miles north of Nikiski, named for explorer Captain James Cook who charted the inlet in 1778.
It features Discovery Campground with 53 wooded sites on bluffs overlooking the inlet's extreme tides, Stormy Lake for swimming, boating, and fishing rainbow trout or arctic char, the Swanson River canoe route terminus, nature trails like Bishop's Creek leading to beaches, and wildlife viewing of moose, black bears, coyotes, beavers, and birds amid birch-spruce forests.
Year-round visitors enjoy beachcombing for agates from volcanic eruptions, hiking, picnicking, winter ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and distant volcano views including Mount Redoubt and Spurr.
