Animal Rescue Service
Fortress of the Bear is a non-profit bear sanctuary and educational center located in Sitka, Alaska, established in 2007 by Les and Evy Kinnear.
It was created in response to the lack of bear rehabilitation programs in Alaska, where orphaned bear cubs are often euthanized because there is no legal way to release them back into the wild. The sanctuary rescues these orphaned cubs, providing them with lifelong protection and a naturalistic habitat within an old pulp mill industrial site, where the founders transformed large concrete tanks into safe enclosures.
Today, the sanctuary is home to several brown and black bears, and it works to restore their health and enrich their lives. Although releasing bears back into the wild is currently not allowed by Alaska state law, Fortress of the Bear collaborates with zoos and other facilities to find homes for some of the bears.
The sanctuary is also a popular educational destination, attracting visitors who can observe bears in a natural-like environment while learning about their histories, behaviors, and the importance of conservation. The mission of the center is to provide care and raise awareness about Alaska's bear populations while advocating for future rehabilitation and release programs.
