Annie and Abel Van Meter State Park, Missouri, United States

Park

Annie and Abel Van Meter State Park in Missouri spans 1,105 acres near Miami in Saline County at the Great Bend of the Missouri River, preserving remnants of a Missouria Indian village first mapped in 1673 by explorers Jacques Marquette and Louis Jolliet, including a hand-dug earthwork called Old Fort and Woodland Indian burial mounds.

Named for Abel Van Meter and gifted by his widow Annie in 1932, it features the Missouri American Indian Cultural Center with exhibits on nine regional tribes like the Otoe-Missouria and Osage, plus an 18-acre fishing lake, hiking trails through the Oumessourit Natural Area's freshwater marsh, fens, bottomland forests, and upland woods with rare plants and migrating birds.

Managed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the park offers shaded picnics, shelters built by the Civilian Conservation Corps, a campground, and trails to Native sites and the historic Van Meter cemetery amid the scenic Pinnacles region.
