Historical Place
Gov. Daniel Dunklin's Grave State Historic Site in Herculaneum, Missouri, preserves the final resting place of Missouri's fifth governor, Daniel Dunklin—known as the father of the state's public school system—perched on limestone bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River.
Born in 1790 near Greenville, South Carolina, Dunklin settled in Missouri around 1810, rose through politics as sheriff, state legislator, and lieutenant governor, then served one term from 1832 to 1836 pushing education reforms, banking changes, and anti-slavery measures before dying of pneumonia in 1844 on his estate near Herculaneum.
Initially buried on family land that was later sold, his remains and those of his wife Emily were reinterred in a one-acre family cemetery in 1885; the state acquired the 1.37-acre site in 1965 to maintain it as a memorial with limestone walls, interpretive signs, and scenic views, open dawn to dusk and managed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
