Park
Confederate Memorial State Historic Site, a 135-acre park in Higginsville, Missouri, preserves the grounds of the Confederate Soldiers Home of Missouri, established in 1891 to provide refuge for aging Civil War Confederate veterans and their families after they faced hardship and disenfranchisement.
The home cared for about 1,600 residents from across the South until the last veteran died in 1950, after which the state acquired the property, demolished most buildings, and opened it as a memorial park in the 1950s with a National Register-listed chapel, cottage, and cemetery holding 723 graves including a monument modeled after the Lion of Lucerne.
Managed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, the site now offers peaceful trails, picnic areas, fishing ponds, disc golf, and exhibits on post-war life for Missouri's 40,000 Confederate soldiers.
