State Park
Aztalan State Park in Wisconsin is a National Historic Landmark preserving an ancient Middle Mississippian village and ceremonial complex dating from around A.D. 1000 to 1300.
The park covers 172 acres along the Crawfish River and features reconstructed portions of the village's stockade made of tall wooden posts, as well as several large, flat-topped earthen mounds that served as platforms for dwellings and ceremonies. The village was divided into different sections including residential and elite areas, surrounded by log-wall fortifications for protection.
Visitors can explore walking trails through prairies and oak woods, view the mounds and stockade, and fish or canoe on the river. The site holds archaeological significance with artifacts like clay pots, arrow points, and jewelry unearthed there, revealing insights into the lives and culture of the people who once thrived there before mysteriously abandoning the site around 1200 A.D.
The park offers a blend of natural beauty, outdoor recreation, and deep historical exploration, with educational tours highlighting its importance in Wisconsin’s indigenous heritage.
