Historical Landmark
Taliesin, located near Spring Green, Wisconsin, is the historic home, studio, and school of the renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, built in 1911 on family land that Wright cherished from his youth.
It served as a laboratory for his ideas on organic architecture, blending natural materials like local limestone and Wisconsin River sand with designs that harmonize with the surrounding landscape. Although the original structure was partially destroyed by fire in 1914, which also tragically claimed seven lives including Wright’s companion Mamah Borthwick Cheney, Wright rebuilt it with new additions reflecting his evolving architectural vision.
Taliesin became the center for the Taliesin Fellowship founded in 1932, where apprentices lived and learned through hands-on experience, contributing to the maintenance and expansion of the estate which includes gardens, drafting studios, and residential quarters. The property exemplifies Wright’s philosophy of “low, wide, and snug” architecture with open floor plans, natural integration, and detailed craftsmanship.
Recognized as a National Historic Landmark and UNESCO World Heritage site, Taliesin remains a prominent cultural landmark representing Wright's artistic legacy and influence on American architecture.
