Tourist Attraction
Cave of the Mounds, located near Blue Mounds, Wisconsin, is a natural limestone cave discovered accidentally on August 4, 1939, during quarry blasting at the Brigham Farm.
Formed over millions of years from Ordovician limestone, it features stunning stalactites, stalagmites, crystal-clear ponds, and unique mineral formations. Shortly after discovery, lights and walkways were installed, opening the cave to the public in May 1940, and it quickly became a popular tourist attraction. The cave is about 1,700 feet long and reaches depths of up to 65 feet underground.
It is recognized as Wisconsin's only National Natural Landmark, noted for its exceptional geological beauty, rarity, and scientific importance. Visitors can explore various parts of the cave via guided tours to learn about its history, geology, and preservation. The surrounding area retains historical ties to the Brigham family, early settlers and farmers who owned the land before the cave's discovery.
