Basilica
The Basilica of Saint Josaphat in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was built between 1896 and 1901 by the city's Polish immigrant community to accommodate a growing congregation.
Inspired by St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome, it features a massive copper-clad dome that rises about 220 feet high, one of the largest steel-domed structures in the world. The basilica was constructed using salvaged materials from the dismantled U.S. Post Office and Customs House in Chicago, including over 200,000 tons of stone, wood doors, bronze railings, and six granite columns that form its grand portico.
The project was led by Father Wilhelm Grutza, who raised funds and organized parishioner labor, including many who were unskilled but highly dedicated. The interior, richly decorated with murals and ornate plasterwork, was completed in the late 1920s, and the church was elevated to a basilica by Pope Pius XI in 1929, becoming the first Polish-American church to receive this honor.
It remains a monument to Milwaukee’s Polish heritage and Catholic faith, celebrated for its monumental architecture and cultural significance.
