Battle of Athens State Historic Site in Missouri spans over 400 acres along the Des Moines River near Revere in Clark County, preserving the site of the northernmost Civil War battle west of the Mississippi, fought on August 5, 1861, where about 500 Union Home Guards under Col.
David Moore repelled nearly 3,000 pro-Southern Missouri State Guard troops led by Col. Martin Green despite being outnumbered five to one. The once-thriving river port town of Athens, with its mill, hotel, and businesses, became a ghost town after the war due to lingering divisions and railroads supplanting river trade, leaving behind the Cannonball House pierced by artillery fire and ruins like the Thome Mill.
Managed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources since 1975, the peaceful site offers hiking trails, fishing in a lake, picnicking, basic camping, guided tours of battlefield remnants, and exhibits on its Native American history including a Sauk and Fox village.
