Battle of Lexington State Historic Site in Missouri preserves 106 acres in Lexington where Confederate Missouri State Guard troops under Maj. Gen. Sterling Price defeated Union Col. James A. Mulligan's forces during the September 18-20, 1861, "Battle of the Hemp Bales," a key early Civil War clash that boosted Southern morale by capturing the vital Missouri River port.
Famous for Price's troops rolling hemp bales soaked in river water as mobile cover to assault Union earthworks, the site features the Anderson House—once "the finest dwelling west of St. Louis"—used as a field hospital by both sides, with visible bullet holes and cannon damage still scarring its walls.
Managed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources since 1958 and listed on the National Register, visitors explore a short battlefield loop trail, self-guided tours, a visitor center with exhibits and audiovisual programs, picnic areas, and remnants of trenches amid peaceful orchards.
