Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah, was founded in 1984 by a group of friends dedicated to rescuing homeless, abused, and special-needs animals, starting with about 200 dogs and cats along with other animals.
Located in a remote canyon, the sanctuary was created as a safe haven where animals receive care and respect, embodying the no-kill philosophy that no animal should be euthanized due to space, age, or medical conditions. The founders built the sanctuary from scratch with minimal resources, learning construction skills along the way, and gradually developed it into the largest no-kill sanctuary in the U.S., housing over 1,500 animals including dogs, cats, horses, pigs, and birds.
Beyond providing shelter, Best Friends became a national movement, inspiring and partnering with shelters across the country to promote no-kill policies and improve animal welfare.
