Landmark
Natural Bridges National Monument in southeastern Utah is home to three impressive natural sandstone bridges named Sipapu, Kachina, and Owachomo, all bearing Hopi names that reflect cultural significance.
These bridges were formed over thousands of years through erosion by water cutting through the Cedar Mesa Sandstone. The monument covers about 12 square miles and was established in 1908 by President Theodore Roosevelt as Utah's first national monument.
The surrounding area also contains numerous archaeological sites including cliff dwellings, petroglyphs, and artifacts left by the Ancestral Puebloans who lived there from about 700 CE until they left the region around 1270. Later, the land was inhabited by the Ute and Paiute tribes.
The monument’s landscape features desert vegetation like piñon pine and juniper, alongside a unique high-desert riparian environment supporting rare plant and animal species. Visitors today can explore hiking trails that lead to the natural bridges and ancient ruins, experiencing both the geological marvels and the rich cultural history preserved at this iconic Utah landmark.
