National Park
Big Bend National Park, located in southwest Texas along the Rio Grande border with Mexico, covers over 800,000 acres and is the largest protected area of the Chihuahuan Desert in the United States.
Known as the "Grand Canyon of Texas," the park features dramatic desert landscapes, deep canyons carved by the Rio Grande, and the rugged Chisos Mountains, which form the only mountain range wholly contained within a U.S. national park. Big Bend offers diverse ecosystems supporting over 1,200 plant species, 450 bird species, and numerous mammals, reptiles, and insects, including rare and endangered species.
Visitors enjoy activities such as hiking over 150 miles of trails, river rafting, bird watching, and stargazing under some of the darkest night skies in the country. The park’s geological features include ancient sea fossils and volcanic formations, reflecting millions of years of natural history.
Established in 1944, Big Bend remains a remote and vast wilderness area that provides both solitude and stunning natural beauty for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers.
