Bollinger Mill State Historic Site in Missouri preserves a four-story brick gristmill built in 1867 by Solomon R. Burford on the Whitewater River in Burfordville, Cape Girardeau County, atop the limestone foundation of an earlier mill started in 1800 by George Frederick Bollinger after his Spanish land grant.
The site includes Missouri's oldest surviving covered bridge, the 140-foot Burfordville Covered Bridge completed in 1868 after Civil War delays, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with the mill demonstrating 19th-century grain processing powered by a water turbine.
Managed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources since 1967 following donations from Bollinger descendants, visitors enjoy guided tours, picnicking by the river, fishing, and exploring this peaceful snapshot of frontier industry and engineering.
