Boone's Lick State Historic Site

Boone's Lick State Historic Site, Missouri, United States

Historical Place

Boone's Lick State Historic Site in Missouri preserves 52 acres of wooded land four miles east of Arrow Rock, centered on ancient saltwater springs used by Native Americans and later commercialized for salt production starting in 1806 by Nathan and Daniel Morgan Boone, sons of frontiersman Daniel Boone, who boiled the briny water to create a vital resource shipped to St. Louis.

This operation sparked settlement in "Boone's Lick Country," fueling westward migration along Boone's Lick Road—the original Native trace widened into a key route from St. Charles to Franklin that became the Santa Fe Trail's starting point in 1821. Managed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources since 1960, visitors can hike short trails to view remnants of the salt works, interpretive exhibits, and markers explaining its role in early Missouri industry and history.
