Historical Place
Bothwell Lodge State Historic Site in Missouri preserves the 31-room, 12,000-square-foot summer lodge built in four phases from 1897 to 1928 by Sedalia attorney John Homer Bothwell atop a 120-foot bluff on his Stonyridge Farm property north of Sedalia in Pettis County.
This Arts and Crafts-style "castle on the hill," constructed from native limestone quarried onsite over natural caves—including one Bothwell attempted to use for air conditioning—features eclectic furnishings, many original, and sweeping valley views that hosted his family and friends until his 1929 death.
Donated to the state in 1974 per Bothwell's will after control passed through the Bothwell Lodge Club, the 246-acre Missouri Department of Natural Resources site now offers guided tours, a 3-mile Stonyridge Trail for hiking and mountain biking past quarries and a stone gazebo, and exhibits highlighting its role as a recreational retreat reflecting early 20th-century Midwest tastes.
