Camp Hancock State Historic Site

Camp Hancock State Historic Site, North Dakota, United States

Historical Place Museum

Camp Hancock State Historic Site in Bismarck, North Dakota, was established in 1872, originally named Camp Greeley, to protect the crews building the Northern Pacific Railroad.

It was renamed Camp Hancock in 1873 after General Winfield Scott Hancock and served as an infantry post until 1877, then became a quartermaster depot and signal station until 1894. The site features the oldest surviving building in Bismarck, a log headquarters that has been remodeled and now serves as a museum with local historical artifacts.

Visitors can also see the Bread of Life Church, built in 1881 and moved to the site in 1965, along with a 1909 Northern Pacific steam locomotive. The site reflects the area's early military and railroad history and offers educational exhibits in a peaceful setting.
