Lake
Cooper Lake State Park is a Texas state park built around Jim Chapman Lake, formerly known as Cooper Lake, a roughly 19,000‑acre reservoir in Delta and Hopkins counties about three miles south of the town of Cooper in northeast Texas.
The park itself covers about 3,000 acres and is split into two main units—Doctors Creek on the north side of the lake and South Sulphur on the south side—both offering easy access to the water. Visitors enjoy fishing for species such as catfish and bass, boating, water skiing, swimming, camping, hiking, horseback riding, and birdwatching across oak‑forested hills, prairies, and marshy grasslands, with the South Sulphur unit especially known for its equestrian trails and vistas over the lake.
The park is a popular weekend getaway within about a 90‑minute drive of Dallas, combining large‑lake recreation with rolling countryside scenery and family‑friendly campgrounds and picnic areas.
