Corpus Christi

Corpus Christi, Texas, United States

Locality

Corpus Christi is a coastal city in southern Texas named after the Roman Catholic Feast Day of Corpus Christi when it was discovered by Spanish explorer Alonso Alvarez de Pineda in 1519.

The city began as Kinney's Trading Post in 1839, founded by Colonel Henry Lawrence Kinney to support trade with a nearby Mexican revolutionary army. It became known as Corpus Christi and was incorporated as a city in 1852. Throughout its history, it played a role in significant events such as the U.S.–Mexico War and the Civil War, during which it was bombarded and blockaded.

The city transformed over time from a small trading outpost to a major port and industrial center, with the Port of Corpus Christi established in 1925 becoming one of the largest and deepest ports on the Gulf of Mexico. Its economy has been supported by shipping, oil and gas, and military installations, while its location on the Gulf Coast gives it a subtropical climate and rich cultural heritage tied to Native American, Spanish, and Mexican influences.
