Wildlife Refuge
The CSKT Bison Range, located in western Montana on the Flathead Indian Reservation, is a wildlife refuge established in 1908 originally as the National Bison Range to conserve American bison.
It spans about 18,800 acres of valley and foothill grasslands and is home to around 350 adult bison with 50–60 calves born each year. The refuge was managed federally for over a century before being returned to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) in 2022, reflecting their deep historical, cultural, and geographic ties to the land and the bison.
The range includes a visitor center, scenic roads for wildlife viewing, and is located about an hour north of Missoula. The transition to tribal management followed decades of negotiations and legal efforts to restore local stewardship over these ancestral lands and their bison population, underscoring the importance of the area both for conservation and for Indigenous cultural heritage.
The site also holds importance as a native bird refuge and has historic ties to the tribes’ spiritual and cultural practices around bison.
