Nature Preserve
Devils River State Natural Area is a roughly 37,000‑acre protected area in southwest Texas, located about 45–66 miles north of Del Rio in Val Verde County, where the rugged, spring‑fed Devils River flows through steep limestone canyons and remote desert landscape.
The natural area lies at the meeting point of three ecosystems—Chihuahuan Desert, Edwards Plateau, and Tamaulipan mezquital—giving it high biological diversity, including rare fish and a unique salamander, with basically no dams or major development along the river.
Visitors can paddle, swim, fish, hike, and bike on limited trails and primitive campsites, mostly in the Dan A. Hughes and Del Norte units, while enjoying very clear water and dramatic canyon scenery in a place that feels far from cities and crowded parks. Access is intentionally restricted and often requires planning, permits, or guided trips, so the area stays mostly wild and undeveloped, serving as one of the last truly pristine river corridors in Texas.
