Earthquake Lake

Earthquake Lake, Montana, United States

Lake

Earthquake Lake in Montana was created suddenly on August 17, 1959, when a powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake triggered a massive landslide that blocked the Madison River, causing water to back up and form a new lake about six miles long.

The earthquake caused significant destruction, including the deaths of 28 people, and left visible scars such as a sheer 20-foot fault scarp and submerged trees standing in the lake. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had to cut spillways through the natural dam formed by the landslide to control water flow and prevent catastrophic flooding.

Today, the Earthquake Lake Visitor Center provides educational exhibits about the earthquake, geology, and survivor stories, making the lake both a natural wonder and a poignant reminder of the event. The lake is located near Yellowstone National Park and remains a scenic and historic landmark in Montana's wilderness.
