State Park
First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park in Montana features what is believed to be the largest bison cliff jump in North America, used by Native American tribes for at least a thousand years before the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
The site consists of a mile-long sandstone cliff with remnants of "drive lines" used to funnel bison toward the cliff edge, where hunters caused a stampede to drive herds over the bluff for efficient hunting. The bone bed beneath the cliff is up to 18 feet deep, indicating the massive scale of kills that occurred here.
The park includes an interpretive center with educational exhibits, a trail, picnic areas, and a prairie dog town, preserving and sharing this important cultural and archaeological heritage. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2015.
