Park
Glacial Lakes State Park occupies nearly 2,500 acres in Pope County, Minnesota, about 5 miles south of Starbuck amid the rolling Leaf Mountains where prairie meets hardwood forests.
Formed by retreating glaciers 11,000 years ago, it showcases kettle lakes like the 56-acre Signalness Lake (Minnesota's cleanest with depths to 13 feet), virgin oak woods, rare native prairies blooming with bluestem grasses, coneflowers, and pasque flowers, plus overlooks at 1,352 feet revealing marshes and glacial hills.
Visitors swim at a clear beach, fish walleye, pike, bass, and panfish (electric motors only), rent canoes or kayaks, hike or horseback ride 16 miles of trails including the paved 5-mile Starbuck Trail, camp at 40 shaded sites with walk-ins and group areas, ski or snowshoe ungroomed paths in winter, and stargaze in low-light skies teeming with birds.
