Park
Goose Island State Park covers 321 acres in Aransas County, Texas, north of Rockport on the coast between St. Charles and Aransas Bays along the Gulf of Mexico, accessible via State Highway 35 and Park Road 13.
Purchased by the state from 1931 to 1935 partly to protect whooping crane habitat and developed by Civilian Conservation Corps Company 1801, it features the famous "Big Tree"—a 2,000-year-old coastal live oak with a 35-foot trunk circumference and 90-foot crown spread—plus camping in 44 bayfront sites, 57 oak-shaded spots, 25 walk-in tent areas, and group facilities, all with water, electricity, and showers.
Visitors flock here for birdwatching (migratory species and locals), fishing, boating from piers and ramps, short hiking trails, geocaching, and wildlife viewing amid twisted oaks and marsh, attracting over 200,000 annually though swimming is discouraged due to the rugged shoreline of concrete, oyster shells, mudflats, and grass.
