Harpers Ferry is a historic town in West Virginia located at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers where Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia meet.
It was settled in the early 1700s by Peter Stephens and later purchased by Robert Harper, who established a ferry that gave the town its name. Harpers Ferry became a significant manufacturing and transportation hub in the 19th century, housing the United States Armory and Arsenal, which produced many of the nation's arms including for the Lewis and Clark expedition.
The town is famously known for John Brown’s 1859 raid on the armory, an attempt to spark a slave rebellion, which heightened tensions leading to the Civil War. Throughout the war, Harpers Ferry was a strategically important location, changing hands multiple times. Much of the town was destroyed during the conflict, but today it is preserved as a National Historical Park with restored buildings, museums, and trails attracting tourists interested in its rich history and scenic beauty.
It also serves as the headquarters for the Appalachian Trail. The town’s economy is now largely based on tourism, reflecting its deep cultural and historical significance in American history.
