Lost World Caverns near Lewisburg, West Virginia, is a spectacular underground cave system discovered in 1942 and designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1973 for its terraced stalagmites, flowstone, curtains, rimstone, domepits, and waterfalls.
Originally known as Grapevine Cave, it was once accessed via a deep vertical shaft used by farmers to dump livestock before a walk-in entrance was dug in the early 1970s. The cave consists of over a mile of interconnected passages reaching 245 feet deep, including a massive chamber measuring approximately 1,000 feet long, 300 feet wide, and 120 feet high with remarkable formations such as the Snowy Chandelier and Bridal Veil.
In 1967, remains of a prehistoric cave bear were unearthed here. Visitors can enjoy self-guided walking tours on safe walkways and may explore wild caving by reservation. The cave also features a natural history museum within the gift shop with exhibits on dinosaurs and Ice Age mammals.
