Tourist Attraction
Seneca Caverns is a karst show cave located in Germany Valley near Riverton, West Virginia, at an elevation of about 2,200 feet. The cave, open to the public since 1930, features around 500 feet of passageways filled with calcite formations such as stalagmites, stalactites, cave coral, and flowstone mounds, including some that are pure white.
The first known human contact with the cave dates back to the early 1400s when the Seneca Indians used it for shelter, storage, and ceremonies, as it lay along a major Native American trading route. Later in 1742, a German settler named Laven Teter officially explored the cave in search of water for his livestock, and the Teter family maintained the land until 1928.
The cave features notable rooms such as "Hell’s Kitchen," a narrow chamber with a chimney-like opening, one of the last areas showing evidence of Seneca Indian use. The cave experience includes walking paths and handrails to help visitors enjoy its natural mineral formations safely.
Seneca Caverns is part of a region rich in limestone caves and has become a popular tourist attraction combining history, geology, and natural beauty.
