Tourist Attraction
Igloo City in Cantwell, Alaska, is a unique and unfinished tourist attraction located about halfway between Fairbanks and Anchorage on the Parks Highway.
Conceived in the early 1970s by Leon Smith, it was intended to be a large igloo-shaped hotel featuring 58 guest rooms arranged around circular floors, a restaurant, bar, gift shop, and a penthouse for Smith's family. However, the structure never opened for business due to difficulties meeting Alaska's building codes and financial challenges.
Over the decades, the concrete dome-like building has deteriorated and become well-known as an abandoned roadside landmark attracting curious travelers, photographers, and adventurers.
Despite repeated efforts by different owners to complete or repurpose the iconic building, it remains unfinished and weathered, serving today as a quirky symbol of ambition and the harsh realities of Alaska's remote wilderness. The site can be explored from the outside and is noted for its large size and unusual design, visible from planes flying over at high altitude.
