Iliniwek Village State Historic Site in Clark County, Missouri, preserves the only known Illinois Indian village discovered in the state, occupied from around 1640 to the late 1670s on a high terrace above the Des Moines River.
At its height, the site likely housed up to 8,000 people in about 300 lodges protected by a palisade, with archaeological finds including house foundations, storage pits, human remains, and early European trade goods like glass beads and metal items; it was visited in 1673 by explorers Louis Jolliet and Father Jacques Marquette, marking their first Native encounter in present-day Missouri.
Acquired by the state in 1992, the 127-acre site offers a 1.25-mile interpretive walking trail with signage, a replica longhouse outline, an oxbow lake, picnic areas, and restrooms, open year-round from sunrise to sunset and managed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
