Park
John A. Latsch State Park covers 1,654 acres along the Mississippi River, 12 miles northwest of Winona in Winona County, Minnesota, featuring three dramatic limestone bluffs—Mount Faith, Mount Hope, and Mount Charity—that rise over 500 feet above the river and served as navigation landmarks for steamboat captains.
Donated in 1925 by local businessman John A. Latsch, this minimally developed Driftless Area park offers a strenuous 0.5-mile Riverview Trail with 300+ stairs climbing to Mount Charity Overlook for panoramic views of the river valley, Lock and Dam No. 5, floodplain forests, prairies, and oak woodlands teeming with deer, foxes, coyotes, peregrine falcons, and migratory birds.
Primarily a roadside wayside on U.S. Route 61 with picnic areas and vault toilets, it provides a quick yet rewarding hike amid unglaciated rugged terrain carved by ancient runoff.
