John Brown's Fort in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia, is a small brick building originally constructed in 1848 as a fire engine and guard house for the federal armory.
It became famous as the site of abolitionist John Brown's last stand during his 1859 raid on Harpers Ferry, where he and his followers seized the armory in an attempt to start a slave uprising. After holding hostages inside the building, Brown was captured by U.S. Marines led by Colonel Robert E. Lee, and later executed for treason.
The building is the only structure remaining from the original armory, as the rest were destroyed during the Civil War. After the raid, the fort was moved several times, including being taken to Chicago for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition before finally returning to Harpers Ferry in 1895 on donated land.
Today, it serves as a historic landmark and museum that commemorates Brown’s raid and its pivotal role in the events leading up to the American Civil War, attracting visitors interested in the country's abolitionist history and heritage.
