Johnny Cash Boyhood Home

Johnny Cash Boyhood Home, Arkansas, United States

History Museum

Johnny Cash's boyhood home is located in Dyess, Arkansas, a New Deal agricultural resettlement colony founded in 1934 to help impoverished families own and farm land.

The Cash family moved there in 1935, living on Farm No. 266, a modest five-room farmhouse built by the Federal Emergency Relief Administration. Johnny Cash, known as J.R. in childhood, grew up working on the cotton farm, an experience that deeply influenced his music, including songs like "Pickin' Time" and "Five Feet High and Rising," inspired by a major flood in the area.

The house is one of the few remaining structures from the Dyess Colony and has been preserved as a museum operated by Arkansas State University, offering visitors insight into both the history of the New Deal colony and childhood life of the legendary musician.

It opened to the public in 2014 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018, serving as a cultural heritage site that connects people with the roots of Johnny Cash's early life and music.
