Park
Lake Colorado City State Park is a 500-acre park southwest of Colorado City in Mitchell County, Texas, leased by Texas Parks and Wildlife for 99 years starting in 1971 and opened in 1972 on the shores of the 1,618-acre Lake Colorado City reservoir, built in 1949 on Morgan Creek for power plant cooling.
Located in the Rolling Plains with grasslands overtaken by mesquite and prickly pear, it offers fishing for largemouth bass, channel catfish, and sunfish from a pier, boat ramp, and barge, plus swimming, kayaking (rentals available), paddleboarding, hiking trails like Cactus Cut and Roadrunner Loop, birdwatching over 300 species, picnicking, geocaching, and camping in RV sites, cabins, or primitive areas.
Visitor numbers surged to 27,817 annually during 2019-2021 amid COVID peaks, though lake levels fluctuate and algae blooms occasionally impact access.
