Lake
Lake Minnetonka, located about 16 miles west-southwest of Minneapolis, Minnesota, is a large and scenic lake covering approximately 14,528 acres with around 125 miles of shoreline.
Formed around 10,000 years ago by retreating glaciers, the lake consists of interconnected bays, channels, marshlands, and 18 islands, giving it an irregular shape. It is divided into an Upper and Lower Lake, with a maximum depth of 113 feet and an average depth near 30 feet.
The lake supports a rich variety of fish species and is popular for boating, sailing, fishing, swimming, kayaking, and paddleboarding during warmer months, and ice fishing and snowmobiling in winter. It also hosts several community festivals throughout the year and features historic homes, yacht clubs, and cruise boats that offer tours on the lake.
The lake's water levels are managed by the Grays Bay Dam, and the lake typically freezes over in winter, with its "ice-out" dates tracked since the mid-1800s. Local legends include sightings of a large sturgeon reputed to inhabit its waters. Lake Minnetonka remains a cherished recreational and natural area, blending its natural beauty with vibrant community life.
