Little Rock Central High School in Arkansas is a historically significant public high school known primarily for its role in the Civil Rights Movement during the desegregation crisis of 1957.
Built in 1927 in the Gothic Revival style as the largest and most expensive high school in the U.S. at the time, it gained national attention when nine African American students, known as the Little Rock Nine, enrolled following the Supreme Court’s 1954 Brown v. Board of Education ruling that declared school segregation unconstitutional.
Facing violent opposition and state resistance led by Governor Orval Faubus, the students were eventually escorted into the school by federal troops ordered by President Dwight D. Eisenhower.
This pivotal event marked a significant step toward integration and equal education in America. The school continues to operate today and is recognized as a National Historic Site, serving as a symbol of the struggle for civil rights and social justice in the United States.
