Lost Maples State Natural Area

Lost Maples State Natural Area, Texas, United States

Park

Lost Maples State Natural Area spans 2,906 acres of rugged hills and canyons along the upper Sabinal River in western Bandera and eastern Real counties, Texas, about five miles north of Vanderpool on Ranch Road 187 and 71 miles northwest of San Antonio.

Purchased by Texas Parks and Wildlife in 1973-1974 to protect relict bigtooth maple stands that create spectacular fall foliage in reds, oranges, and yellows from late October to November, it became a national natural landmark in 1980 amid steep limestone cliffs, springs, and diverse Edwards Plateau ecosystems home to golden-cheeked warblers, black-capped vireos, and other wildlife.

Over 11 miles of strenuous hiking trails like East Trail, West Trail, and Mystic Canyon Loop lead to overlooks, Monkey Rock, grottos, and primitive campsites, with 30 regular sites, limited access during peak season, and emphasis on preservation over heavy recreation in this remote Hill Country gem.
