The Maltese Cross Cabin in North Dakota, located at the Theodore Roosevelt National Park Visitor Center near Medora, was built in 1883 as Theodore Roosevelt’s first ranch home in the Dakota Badlands.
Constructed of durable ponderosa pine logs, it featured a shingled roof, wooden floors, and separate rooms including a kitchen, living room, and Roosevelt's bedroom, along with a steep pitched roof creating a sleeping loft for ranch hands. Roosevelt stayed here while developing his love for the rugged outdoor lifestyle before becoming president. The cabin was moved several times after Roosevelt's presidency, including for the 1904 World's Fair, before being restored and preserved as a historic site where visitors can see original furnishings and personal items, reflecting Roosevelt's formative years in the West.
