State Park
McKinney Falls State Park, located about 13 miles southeast of downtown Austin, Texas, covers 641 acres at the meeting point of Onion Creek and Williamson Creek.
The park offers diverse outdoor activities including hiking and biking on several miles of trails, camping at multiple sites with various amenities, fishing and swimming in the spring-fed Onion Creek, and picnicking in shaded areas.
It features the scenic upper and lower waterfalls on Onion Creek and the Smith Rock Shelter, used by Native Americans for thousands of years, as well as historic ruins from early settlers including Thomas F. McKinney’s homestead and mill.
The landscape blends lush riparian areas with oak-juniper woodlands and wildflower fields, supporting abundant wildlife such as white-tailed deer, raccoons, armadillos, and various songbirds. Open year-round with a small entrance fee, the park connects visitors with natural beauty and Texas history just outside the city.
