The Milwaukee County Zoo, founded in 1892 as the West Park Zoo in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, began with a small collection of mammals and birds in a simple barn.
It was renamed Washington Park Zoo in 1900, expanding to 23 acres with improvements like bear dens and a reptile exhibit during the early 20th century. In response to growth and aging infrastructure, plans for a new zoo location emerged in the 1940s, leading to the opening of the current 190-acre site near Bluemound Road and Highway 100 in 1961.
