The Minnesota Zoo, located in Apple Valley, opened in 1978 as one of the first zoos in the world to organize animals by their natural habitats instead of species type.
Spread across 485 acres, it is home to more than 4,400 animals representing nearly 500 species in immersive exhibits such as the Medtronic Minnesota Trail, Tropics Trail, Northern Trail, Discovery Bay, Russia’s Grizzly Coast, and the Wells Fargo Family Farm.

The zoo has become internationally recognized for its conservation initiatives, including projects to restore native bison, mussels, turtles, and endangered butterflies in partnership with the Department of Natural Resources.
